Oriental Band April - May 2008 Newsletter
Chili Cook-off/Social Night Wednesday April 23rd; Happy Hour Starts at 6;30, Dinner at 7:15
Folks we’re going to have our “Chili” night next week, and you can have your Chili entered in a
Contest (if you desire) Here’s the deal: If you bring a Pot of Chili and/or an Appetizer to share,
you will eat free, but we will collect $3 per person towards drink costs. If you run short of time
and can’t bring either Chili or an Appetizer, you will be charged $6 for food & drink. Let’s see if
we can’t have a great variety of Chili’s. The O.B. will furnish the Bowls, Crackers, Napkins,
Spoons, etc. so, just bring your Chili or Appetizers and your appetite! This will be our last
Wednesday Night Social until September
Cornhole Fundraiser: The Oriental Band would like to take this opportunity to thank the Mt.
Healthy Eagles #2193 on Kinney Avenue for hosting our Cornhole Tournament April 12th, where
we raised $ for the O.B.’s “Ladder of Smiles” which is the path Oriental Bands take to donate $
to our Hospitals. The Eagles provided us with the Hall, the Boards, and even staffed the event.
It was a great example of two fraternal organizations cooperating with each other for a common
good. In addition to thanking the Eagles, we want to thank our O.B. members Cliff and Gina
Christensen for organizing this event, Paul Minton for gathering Door Prizes, Eric Metz for the
Posters, and to our Ladies Tami Metz, Stella Anderson, Gina (again) and Sue Martini, who
helped with the registration, food and door prizes, and last but not least, thanks to all the
Bandsmen and Syrian members, especially the Motor Patrol, who participated and supported
us and the Hospital for this event. The proceeds from this event will be presented to the
“Ladder of Smiles” at our Jamboree on Saturday June 14th at the Drawbridge Inn.
Jamboree: As previously mentioned, our annual GLSOBA Oriental Band Jamboree will be held
the second weekend in June and the Syrian O.B. is hosting the event featuring Band
Competitions, Jam Sessions, a Golf Outing, and our Saturday Night Banquet where all the
Oriental Bands will present their respective $ to the Ladder of Smiles. Since we’re hosting the
event, we are not eligible for the Stage Competitions, but we hope to be the best of hosts and
provide a good weekend for all Bandsmen. Our Jack Drach, who has been bothered with health
problems, has agreed to be our Master of Ceremonies, and is also lining up the Judges for this
event. We hope Jack feels better, and that he can attend and enjoy this Jamboree. Registration
fee for the Jamboree is $85. Get your $85 to Dan Depenbrock for the Registration. Bandsmen
are responsible for making their own room reservations at the Drawbridge (859) 341-2800 and
then let Dan know if you have reserved a room at the Drawbridge, and whom you will be
staying with (or single), Also, if you’re planning on Golfing on Friday the13th at the Jamboree,
see John Longsworth. You need not pay in advance, but you must sign up, in order to be
guaranteed a Tee Time.
Imperial Session St. Louis: The Oriental Band has made a commitment to attend the Imperial
Session in St. Louis in support of our Potentate “Bud” Wilhite and Lady Diane, and also to take
part in the Imperial Oriental Band Competition out there. The Imperial Session runs from June
29th – July 3rd and we’re urging all Band Members and fellow Syrian Members to join us for
what should be a great time. In order to be guaranteed a room, you (we) need to get our Hotel
deposit into Becky at the Temple right now! The fee of $130 includes a $25 non-refundable
binder fee. This guarantees you a room at the Hotel where Syrian Temple members are staying,
and this same Hotel will be the Site of the Imperial Band Competitions, so we won’t even have
to leave Hotel on Monday to participate and enjoy the Competition. Sign up forms are in the
Shreik, or drop by and give your $ to Becky, and also let her know how many nights you’ll be
staying. You can stay for as many nights (1-5) as you want, but the additional number of nights
and payments will be between you and the Hotel. The $130 guarantees you a room for Sunday
night June 29th. Remaining nights are $105 per night.
Flower Cards: If you have any $ or Flower Cards outstanding, please see Wayne Bunner, so
that we may get a count as to where we stand on this Project.
Syrian Temple Golf Outing: Scheduled for Saturday May 10th at Vista Verda Golf Club has
been cancelled.
Joe & Rosie Roedig; Rec’d word that Rosie is under care, but is not at home. I don’t have any
other details at this time.
