The Oriental Band, as are all units in Shrinedom, is made up of Nobles from many "walks
of life". It has been the good fortune of Syrian Temple to have men dedicating their time
and talents to the many activities of the Oriental Band.
The members' wives made the early uniforms and members made the drums. One drum
was made of empty nail kegs. This was accomplished by putting drum heads on each end
of the kegs and then painting the Shrine colors on the outside.
The first appointed director of Syrian Temple Oriental Band was Dr. C.I. Deer. He was
followed by Edward A. Hartman Jr., who served as director from 1939 until 1956.
